Why now's a good time to start storing rainwater
With the warm weather we've had recently, watering demand is climbing. A stored supply of rainwater takes the pressure off and makes keeping your garden going far easier — and rainwater carries natural nutrients that plants benefit from, unlike treated tap water.
It's also becoming more relevant by the week. South East Water has introduced a hosepipe ban for its customers in Kent, with restrictions taking effect from Friday 3 July, and Southern Water has a separate ban already in place across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Other water companies across the South East are asking customers to cut back voluntarily as reservoir levels fall.
A water butt won't get you round a ban that covers garden hoses specifically, but having stored rainwater on hand for a watering can or drip-feed means you can keep your garden going through dry spells without relying on mains supply — and if restrictions spread further as summer continues, having that backup in place already puts you ahead.
