Emergency Flood Response at Crewe Alexandra Training Ground: Burst Water Main and Sewage Treatment Plant Surcharge
On Sunday 7th June 2026, we received an emergency call from Crewe Alexandra's training ground reporting serious flooding across the site. A United Utilities water main had burst on Wettenhall Lane, and the volume of water flowing onto the site had surcharged the sewage treatment plant, leaving the training pitches under water.
The Situation on Arrival
Our team attended site the same day and found:
Training pitches flooded – standing water across the playing surfaces from the burst main
Sewage treatment plant surcharged – the plant overwhelmed by the volume of surface water entering the system
Risk of environmental contamination – surcharging created a risk of untreated wastewater reaching the surrounding ground and watercourses
Wastewater system damage – the surge had caused damage to the site's waste water infrastructure
Immediate Emergency Action
With contamination risk and further damage a real concern, we moved straight into emergency response:
Organised tankering to remove flood water from site
Isolated the sewage treatment plant to prevent further environmental contamination
Assessed damage to the wastewater system
Monday 8th June: Site Recommissioned
Working alongside United Utilities as they carried out temporary repairs to the burst main, our team completed the following by Monday 8th June:
All surface water removed from site
Sewage treatment plant re-commissioned
United Utilities' temporary main repair completed
Minimal Damage, Fast Recovery
Thanks to the speed of the response, damage to the site was kept to a minimum. Remaining works included:
Clean-up of the training ground
Inspection of the astroturf for flood damage
Cleaning of the flooded building
The training ground was back up and running with no lasting impact on the facility.
Why a Fast Emergency Response Matters
Sewage treatment plant surcharging isn't just a nuisance flood — it carries real environmental and health risks if untreated wastewater is allowed to escape into the surrounding land or watercourses. Isolating the plant quickly and removing flood water before it can spread is essential to limiting contamination and protecting the site from further damage.
