Install a Water Butt Now to Be Ready for Summer 2027
Summer 2026 was the hottest UK summer on record, according to the Met Office. Another warm spell is forecast for the last weekend of September (26/27), but for many gardeners this summer has been defined by drought and restrictions.
Hosepipe bans and the 2026 drought
Nine major water companies across England and Wales introduced hosepipe bans this summer, with an estimated 26 million people having their water use restricted. For many garden owners, that raised a familiar question: how do you keep plants watered when mains water is limited?
Plan ahead for next summer
The best answer is to collect rainwater before you need it. A water butt installed now will be ready to use in spring 2027, so you have a supply ready when the hot weather returns. Forecasters are already predicting summer 2027 could be the hottest on record.
Using stored rainwater also takes pressure off public water supplies, and rainwater is naturally soft, which plants prefer.
How a water butt connects to your downpipe
Our water butts connect to your downpipe using a diverter (sold separately). Rain that hits your roof runs through the guttering and down the pipe, and the diverter directs it into the butt, ready to use whenever you need it.
Help reduce flood risk this winter
A water butt also helps in wet weather. By holding back some of the water from your roof during heavy rain, it slows the flow into local drains and can help reduce the risk of flooding. That's useful as we head into a season of unpredictable weather.
