Compliance Upgrade in Audlem: Resolving a Non-Compliant Foul Water System

A homeowner in Audlem, Cheshire (CW3) contacted Envirocare Off Mains after concerns were raised about their property's foul water drainage arrangement. Following an inspection, the system was found to be discharging in breach of Environment Agency binding rules - requiring a full compliance upgrade to bring it into line with current regulations.

Scope of Works

  • Homeowner drainage survey to assess the existing system

  • Identification of non-compliance issues

  • Installation quotation and proposal

  • Supply and installation of a new sewage package treatment plant

  • Separation of surface and foul water discharge routes

  • Liaison with local authority building control

  • Environment Agency compliance certification

The Job

A drainage survey was carried out at the property to establish how the existing system was operating. The survey found that surface water and foul water were not segregated, with combined discharge running directly to a nearby watercourse. This meant the system did not meet Environment Agency binding rules, putting the homeowner at risk of enforcement action.

We provided an installation quotation to resolve the non-compliance, which was accepted. Work began the week commencing Monday 22nd June 2026, with the installation of a Marsh Ensign PE06 sewage package treatment plant - a gravity discharge system with an external blower. As part of the works, surface water was rerouted to a designated drain, separating it from the foul water system, which now discharges correctly via the treatment plant to the watercourse.

The installation was completed by Friday 26th July. Cheshire East Council building control attended the development to inspect the works, and the installation passed inspection and was certificated. An Environment Agency compliance certificate was subsequently supplied to the homeowner, confirming the system now meets all required standards.

Outcome

  • Foul and surface water systems fully segregated

  • Non-compliant discharge arrangement resolved

  • New sewage package treatment plant installed and operational

  • Building control inspection passed and certificated

  • Environment Agency compliance certificate issued

  • Full regulatory compliance achieved

The homeowner was pleased with the reinstatement of the site following the works, and has since recommended our services to a neighbour facing the same compliance issue.
