Upgrading a 20PE Sewage Treatment Plant for Off-Mains Properties: Solving Surcharging and Compliance Issues
Following an enquiry from a property management committee responsible for several off-mains properties, we were asked to investigate ongoing operational problems with a 20PE sewage package treatment plant serving the site.
Our team carried out a comprehensive survey and technical assessment of the existing wastewater treatment system to identify the causes of the failures and ensure the installation could meet current operational and regulatory standards.
During the inspection, a number of key issues were identified that were affecting the performance of the plant, including:
The sewage treatment plant regularly surcharging, indicating the system was operating beyond its effective capacity
Solids passing through the treatment process, resulting in blockages within the outlet manhole and downstream drainage system
Reduced treatment efficiency, creating a potential risk of non-compliance with Environment Agency regulations
Following the investigation, we presented the management committee with a practical upgrade solution designed to resolve the operational problems and restore reliable performance.
The proposed upgrade package focused on:
Improving the treatment efficiency of the 20PE sewage treatment plant
Preventing solids carryover and outlet blockages
Ensuring the system operates within Environment Agency compliance requirements for off-mains wastewater treatment
By addressing the root causes of the system failure, the upgrade provides a long-term, compliant wastewater treatment solution for the off-mains properties, improving reliability and reducing the risk of future operational issues.
